Who We Are

The National Montford Point Marine Association, Inc. (NMPMA)

The National Montford Point Marine Association, Inc. (MPMA), is a nonprofit Veterans Service Organization established in 1965 with the mission of perpetuating the legacy of the first African Americans Marines who trained at the Montford Point Camp between 1942 to 1949. Despite training separately, these men performed their jobs with professionalism and bravery on the battlefields of WWII.


The NMPMA works to improve the social conditions of veterans and their families by implementing programs to provide youth mentoring, educational scholarships, and assistance within the growing population of senior citizens. On February 29, 2024, the National Montford Point Marine Association, Inc., was recognized by the United States Veterans Administration and approved as a Veterans Service Organization  for the purpose of preparing, presenting, and prosecuting claims under the laws administered by the Department of Veterans Affairs.

The Montford Point Marine Association, Los Angeles Chapter 8 plays a crucial role in supporting the NMPMA  by extending its mission of service, camaraderie, and civic engagement to the families of Montford Point Marines and veterans. The Montford Point Marines, who were the first African Americans to serve in the Marine Corps represents a historic era military history and the Los Angeles chapter helps to honor their legacy. 


We not only serve the veterans themselves but support their families—many of whom faced their own challenges during and after their loved ones’ military service.

Mission

The Mission of the Los Angeles Chapter of the National Montford Point Marine Association is to:

 

  • Preserve and honor the legacy of those African American Marines who were trained during World War II under adverse conditions at Montford Point, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.
  • Preserve and honor the legacy of all United States Veterans who have served their country honorably.
  • Provide resources for under-privileged children in the community.
  • Provide college scholarship funds at the chapter level for deserving high school graduates among the MCJROTC programs at the four high schools that we support.
  • Support veteran families in need through partnerships with a local community colleges.


Membership Qualifications

The NMPMA Inc family. Membership in the association is open to veterans and active members who meet the following criteria:

  • Honorably served in the Armed forces of the U.S. at least 90 days on active duty
  • Received an honorable discharge at the time of separation

Are you related to a Montford Point Marine?

Montford Point Marine Association also consists of the Auxiliary. Membership in the Auxiliary is open to husbands, wives, sons, daughters, sisters, and mothers of members or former members of the United States Armed Forces.



Our members embody the core values of the original Montford Point Marines and help ensure that the legacy of these pioneering individuals continues to inspire future generations.

Know Someone Who Is a Montford Point Marine?

The Montford Point Marine Association and its 35 affiliated Chapters across our nation, is a non-profit veteran's organization established to perpetuate the legacy of the first African-Americans who were permitted, for the first time, to enlist in the United States Marine Corps between the years 1942 - 1949. These African Americans were required to be trained separately, apart from white Marines, at Montford Point Camp, New River, North Carolina, and subsequently to serve in racially segregated units through World War II, and the following period of peace.
